The building dates from 1698, and got its final appearance around 1880 with the straight cornice with four consoles. The garden house was probably also built during this renovation.
This special merchant's house has had many residents since its foundation. One special resident, worth mentioning, is Cabaret performer Wim Sonneveld who lived in the house from October 1943 to January 1956.
