After visiting the only residential island in the Netherlands, you will certainly be convinced that people in 1881 were also highly skilled at constructing their homes. This fort features many elements that remind you of the station of armed forces. At the same time, it is luxurious and beautifully finished, making it a comfortable living space. Around 2000, the fort was made habitable. The current apartment has a living area of approx. 274 m² and a double garage. In total, this location includes eleven dwellings, of which eight apartments and three waterfront villas situated along the canal. The location on the edge of the Biesbosch National Park is also ideal.
In short, a wonderful living environment for nature lovers, but also an ideal location relative to the cities, including Dordrecht, Gorinchem and Rotterdam. The A15 - A27 motorways are also within reach!
‘Fort Steurgat’ was constructed in 1881-1882 at the foot of the Merwedebandijk southwest of Werkendam. It served to close off the river and dike along the Merwede. Although several plans were made, the fort was not covered by inundations. Fort Steurgat has a simple basic form and was equipped with large, bombproof barracks. The depot with two underground gunpowder warehouses at the front of the fort is connected to the bombproof barracks by means of a postern. In the sixties, there was a protective shelter from which, under special circumstances, one could maintain contact with Dutch ships. Between 1998 and 2000, the fort was transformed into an exclusive residential island. The existing buildings were converted into three villas, three penthouses and five apartments. The bridge over the fort moat, which was once replaced by a dam, has been reconstructed.
