History of the remarkable building at 19 Quai Saint Michel:
A tenement building from the first half of the 19th century, with annexes at 22 and 24 rue de la Huchette.
The main facade overlooking the Seine features an arcade with five arched bays. It features a three-storey, five-bay elevation above the first floor and entresol, plus an attic level converted into living quarters.
Access is via a central double-leaf door set in an opening that extends beyond the first floor and terminates, at entresol level, in a semicircular arch entirely occupied by a window.
With the exception of a cartouche at the keystone of the central bay - the only remarkable sculpted decoration on the façade - the four bays, divided into twos on each side, follow the same pattern. Above each of the five keystones, a wall bracket supports a suspended glass lantern. French windows with louvers and elaborately decorated railings, placed vertically above the arches, provide light on the upper floors, while smaller windows illuminate the attic apartments.
The beautiful balance of this sober, harmonious facade is now broken in the attic, where one of the small windows has been replaced by a large bay window. Furthermore, the additions - such as colorful awnings and flags - made to the facade by the commercial and catering establishments occupying the first floor, prevent the walker from appreciating the beautiful lanterns.
History painter François Victor Eloi Biennourry (1823-1893) moved into this building in 1852 and died here in 1893.
Caen-born painter Albert-Jules Édouard had his studio here from 1870 to 1919.
Henri Matisse (1869-1954) occupied a studio on the third floor from 1895 to 1907, then on the fourth in 1913.
Albert Marquet (1857-1947) moved into the studio vacated by Matisse in January 1908.

Environment and Neighborhood:
5th Arrondissement - The historic heart of the Latin Quarter has been a centre of scholarship and intellectual achievement for centuries and takes its name from the Sorbonne, where Latin was the common tongue for all students during the Middle Ages. This arrondissement is one of the oldest districts of the city where traces of the area's past survive in such sites as the Arènes de Lutèce, a Roman amphitheatre, and the Thermes de Cluny, a Roman thermae. It remains a major draw card thanks to sights such as the Pantheon, the Sorbonne University, the botanical gardens known as the Jardin des Plantes. The neighbourhood has the feel of a small village and students mix freely with professionals in its winding streets. The market street of Rue Mouffetard is a primary artery where shops, international restaurants, bars and cafes are found.
